Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 15-18 minutes. Set aside.
While onions cook, grill the hot dogs, turning occasionally, until heated through and lightly charred, about 6-8 minutes.
Lightly toast the buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes until warm and slightly crisp.
Spread 1 oz of cream cheese on the inside of each bun.
Place a hot dog in each bun and top generously with the grilled onions.
