This Crispy Spicy Tofu Stir-Fry is a flavor-packed, texturally wonderful dinner inspired by high-heat Asian cooking. Pressing and crisping the tofu gives every bite a golden crunch, while a punchy sauce brings heat, tang, and umami. Bell pepper and scallion add color and freshness, and a last-minute garnish of cilantro brightens it up. It’s quick, satisfying, and perfect for weeknights—serve it over jasmine rice for an extra-comforting meal.
Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Press tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Cut into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Toss tofu cubes with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of neutral oil in a large nonstick or cast iron skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add tofu in a single layer and cook, turning occasionally, until golden and crispy on all sides (about 8-10 minutes). Remove tofu and set aside.
  4. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the pan. Add scallions, bell pepper, garlic, ginger, and jalapeño (if using). Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until vegetables are just tender and fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, chili-garlic sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sugar, and black pepper.
  6. Return tofu to the pan. Pour sauce over the tofu and vegetables. Toss quickly to coat everything evenly and cook for 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens and glazes the tofu.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning with more chili-garlic sauce or soy sauce if desired. Remove from heat.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with cilantro. Offer over jasmine rice if desired.
